CG documentation has nothing to do with state sales/use tax. I would think one would pay the tax of the state where the vessel was purchased. Here in California, if there is a broker involved in the purchase, that broker is required to inform the state and/or arrange the payment. (BUT) Maybe they use the state which the boat has listed as its hailing port. My 42' is documented as being out of San Francisco, CA. I paid the tax. Later a friend in Washington told me that if I take the boat there as I planned that Washington would tax me, again! That is if I could not show proof of taxes paid in California. I wrote to the Board of Equalization's and they sent me proof of payment.
