Thanks to all for your advice. I will likely try the Goo Gone. It's currently too hot in northern AZ to use a steamer. If I have trouble, I'll wait till it cools off and try steam. I'm tinkering with other products so I can apply the product and work on something else while it soaks in. I don't know what kind of glue was used for the wall paper but will send a piece to NASA for analysis. They could use this adhesive on the space shuttle to keep those heat shield from from falling off.
If I can finish this job well I may even talkle the lovely white shag in the V-berth!
