So I have begun my ritual of maintenance on my boat this past weekend. I
hit the honey do list of things that I have been making notes on all summer
that I didnt want to deal with either because I was to busy boating or
because the engine room is too darn hot during the summer. Anyway, I was
down in the engine room this weekend doing oil changes and replacing my
starter battery. I needed to get the block heaters going. I fired them up,
took off for some lunch and came back to find the engines still ice cold.
What the heck? So off I went on a sidetrack of figuring out why the block
heaters weren't working. No power to them...so I started tracing the wiring
back and found that the PO had plugged the block heaters into standard
household extension cords that were very light duty and then plughed the
extension cords into household light timers! To top it off those timers
were plugged into an 8 plug outlet strip. UGH. I unplugged the block
heaters from their extension cords to find that where they were plugged in
was completely charred. I ended up rewiring the whole thing so there was a
single set of wires from the block back to the outlets. I cut out the timers
as well. I'm diligent enough that I doubt I will need them. They are more
of a pain than they are worth to me.

Next I was working on replacing hoses on the aft head. I started digging
into the cabinets to find that one of the hoses was rubbing in the spot
where a hole saw cut a cabin to push the hose through. Instead of fixing
the real problem the PO wrapped some electrical tape around the hose which
of course was rubbed right through. No wonder my rear head smelled so bad!

Man I can't want to get through all these surprises!

Thanks,

Kerry
