My 42 DCMY (actually designated an SE II) was launched in 1984. I had the zincs
changed at my last haulout.  I asked the yard to save the old pieces.  I just
went out to look at them and found two rectanglar units that measure about 30
cm X 15 cm.  They are marked: "RELIANCE, MIL SPEC, DD 612, CANADA".  I also
found five (5) round zincs and I don't know why there are five.  They came from
my rudders and trim tabs.  I don't see any shaft zincs -- I don't know why.
They had been on for about 2 1/2 years and were quite cruddy and had some holes
eaten into them.  My boat is in fresh water all but two weeks of the year.

Thanks for the heads up Bob.  Since I haven't changed these before do you
think I should just hire a diver and have him figure it all out the first
time?  Taggert's Marine is down in my neck of the woods (Gig Harbor, WA) and
I bet he could figure it out (for a price).  Then at least I would have it
documented what I need.  I do have trim tabs...all though they don't seem to
do much on a boat this size.  I have changed all the raw water zincs on the
engine but I forget about the genset!  Good reminder there.

I think each boat may be a little different. For my 1973 42' I have
the following:

A rectangular hull anode zinc on the transom- size depends on the
fitting
4 zincs on the shafts. 2 per shaft. Diameter depends on the shaft
a rudder anode zinc on each rudder.
You need trim tab anode zincs if you have a trim tab

I have pencil zincs in each raw water cooling element in the mains and
generator.

And I have a zinc on my honda outboard.

Best selection in Seattle is Fisherman's.

I've been told that when a boat is in fresh water you may not need to
paint and change zincs each year. You need to inspect the zincs for
corrosion. If they look OK then they just need cleaning. The zincs get
a crud on them so should be removed and brushed bright with a wire
brush and reinstalled.
