The first thing you need to do if it hasn't already been done is to get rid of the points and install an electronic ignition. I recommend NGK BR6FS spark plugs, they improved performance in my 454s. The other thing that helped was to have my props balanced and the shafts aligned. Keep in mind you don't have any slack in fuel consumption of these engines, any problem noticeably effects it.
