a few years ago I redid my 36 dcmy,, came out great,,, used a pad we use in 
 commercial carpet, called '' double stick,, where you glue the pad down,, 
about  1/4'' thick,, great for engine noise etc,, then I glued the carpet to 
it,, no  stretching/ tackstrip etc,, cut about 1 '' large and trimmed to 
fit once in  place,, I had all hatch's bound for a real nice edge, but can 
just staple in  tight,,,
 then I did a boat I sold and even liked it better ,, same pad , but  used 
2'x2' carpet squares,, again a commercial product ,, seams go away and  
looks like a pro job,, very doable by any body handy ,,  tedc
