I'm finding different ways of checking the fluid, one is in the manual in setting up a new boat, sound like what you are refering to, hooked up wrong to the cooler. Another reference to checking the fluid is in my Chrystler engine manual, which I think is original to my boat(has a saltydog picture on the front) it says you must check the fluid in reverse becouse of the slant of the engine.
