sounds like you have air in the steering system.  check the reservoir in
the steering pump at the upper helm.  If it's low there, you probably
pumped air into the system.  Bleeding the air can be easy or difficult,
depending on the brand of steering and whether there is a bypass valve at
the steering ram.

You ask about a "steering compressor" - I have never seen a Uniflite with
power-assisted hydraulic steering; it's usually found on larger boats.
There might be a pressure chamber near the rudders, which uses air pressure
to assist with steering, but it's not common on boats as old as ours.  The
pump that's located near the rudder gear is probably for your autopilot.

What brand is your steering?  If it's Capilano, there may be a bypass
valve, which makes it easier to bleed out the air.  Get the brand name and
model number from the label on the ram or on one of the helm pumps.  Then
look on the internet for an installation manual that will tell you how to
bleed the system.
