If you haven't removed the 454s yet, I have. Remove all the accessories as
well as the exhaust manifolds. If you are going to rebuilt, remove intake
manifold and heads to make the block lighter. The bare blocks will fit out
the door with an inch or two to spare. (If I recall, the framing is 24" and
with doors, about 21"). I used an engine lift in the salon, then inserted
the hatch and lowered the block onto a dolly. Rolled it over to the
stairs. Put sheet of plywood on stairs and had yard lift block out. I did
put 2x10s across the salon at the edge of the hatch to distribute the
weight from the engine lift wheels.

I just had to remove my Onan (it died a horrible death after 42 years).
Used the same procedure but reassembled the engine hoist on the aft deck to
life generator up the stairs. In the Spring, when I uncover, yard will
lift old one off and new one on. They should be able to position the boom
to drop the generator right down the stairs onto the plywood and slide down
the stairs to the dolly waiting at the bottom.
