waxman-I have a 34 foot sedan, also 1973, and I have taken the engines out
twice, once for rebuilding and the other time because I had to replace the fuel
tanks. These engines are small block 350's. I took mine out through the cabin
hatches which are right in the middle of the cabin. All the furniture comes out
and I made an A frame that would span about 1/2 of the hatch width and used a
chain hoist to lift them out through the hatch. Once out, board over the hole
and put them down and rearrange the A frame to lift them over to the middle of
the boat and backwards out the door and onto the aft deck. From there you can
get it on a rolling cart or grab it with a crane or wrecker or whatever you can
get ahold of. In the case of the rebuilds I tore them down to the main block
and left the transmissions in place. They are a lot easier to handle as a block
minus all the manifolds ect. Actually put the block on a hand cart and we
wheeled it out the transom door and up the dock to my pickup. In the case of
removing the fuel tanks, I was able to lift them out with manifolds and all
still on the engine, again leaving the transmissions in place. My cabin hatches
are in three pieces, two on each side and a narrow one in the middle. Once one
engine was out, I put the one side hatch back in, (the A frame has to be sized
correctly to be able to do this) and dropped the motor on boards on top of the
hatch and repositioned the A frame over a bit and picked it up again and slide
it as far to the other side, over the other engine, so I could open the hatch
again to gain access to the fuel tanks that are located beside each engine
between the engine and the hull of the boat. I imagine that your fuel tanks are
located perhaps in the same area or where ever they are you should take a good
look at replacing them also if they have not been replaced since the boat was
new. I did both of these jobs while in the water. You get s pretty good list in
the boat with both engines on one side along with whatever fuel you may still
have on that side and no fuel on the other. But it worked and I did most of the
work by myself, except for wrangling the tanks out which are 8 feet long and
hard to get ahold of. Good luck. A long metal A frame with a rail would be very
helpful getting the motors from the cabin to the aft deck. I don't think there
was anyway to get mine out of the boat through the cockpit hatch. The 36 is
bigger in a lot of ways than the 34 so maybe you can. Hal

I have a 36 fot aft cabin. time to remove both 454 and rebuild. do I have to
take the apart? Will they fit through the door or bay window onto the aft deck?

Thanks for any assistance.

hello all,

My 36' foot sport sedan just arrived at my house. It is a 1973. She
is a major project boat. We are going to update everything in her,
including repowering the boat. She has 454 crusaders right now. I am
going to stick with those because I will not be going out enough to
justify the higher cost of diesels.

What I would like to know is if anybody has done a repower themselves
and if there are any tips / tricks to getting the engines out. it
seems pretty straight foreward.... Disconnect everything, slide
engines under the cockpit hatch and remove with a crane. Any other
advice will be great.

Thanks,

Victor
