This could maybe address the issues related to kernel panic where the left-most 
brach is r/o.
Quoting from Gentoo bugzilla (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127073):
"Before kernel 2.6.16 the i_node locking in VFS was semaphore based. Now mutex 
are used."
