The rename functionality in unionfs is quite involved.  You need to take a
deep breath before diving into it.  :-)

yes, I know.  haven't wanted to scratch out my eyes yet.

As an aside, can someone from the FSL try to redo my benchmarks to see if they can recreate my numbers that unionfs + base is faster than base. As that should be impossible. Jason would never let me publish numbers that say that without a good, unhand wavey, reason. I'm guessing you have some experience w/ that :)
