Subject: Re: [UC] house falling apart?
It might be a nice idea if the UC District or UC Historical Society could buy a
house like this and fix it up. It would be a great way to do demonstrations for
the community, too. Ex. Letting people watch (or help) put in dry wall or bathroom
tile, restore woodwork, put in windows, landscaping, etc. all being done IN AN
ACTUAL HOUSE. There are almost certainly some local people who might volunteer
their time to work on a house like this under the guidance of a professional.
There might also be an opportunity to bring in local youth so that they could
learn from professional craftsmen, thus building skills and experience they could
use to get a job after graduation; i know this has been done successfully in some
cities. The house could ultimately be sold, or else converted into some sort of
community center for local groups (UCHS has no permanent home, for example, as far
as I know). Also, perhaps Hanley Bodek and William Zucker would be interested in
rehabing this house for their City Planning 552 course at Penn if it's still being
offered.
