another idea: make it out of wood and give it a
faux marble finish. I know folks who've done this
(and I know folks who are good at faux finishes --
I mean, really good, with depth and luster effects
that pass even the closest scrutiny). it'd be
cheaper, you could get the size/shape/color you
wanted, and it's the kind of thing that was
commonly done Back Then along with combed and
feathered woodgraining.
