Subject: Great news about Safe Routes to School!

Next Wednesday, June 18, Congressman Oberstar (D-MN), Ranking Member of the
House Transportation and Infrastructure, is introducing a Safe Routes to
School bill as part of TEA-21 reauthorization, called PACE- "Pedestrians and
Cyclist Equity Act of 2003." In addition to the Safe Routes to School
program, the initiative would establish a Transportation and Active Living
program and a Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program to improve
pedestrian connectivity to public transit, civic facilities, and businesses.

Event details are below, and a request to contact House Members to be
original co-sponsors.

Thanks! -Nancy, STPP

Dear Friends,

On June 18th, Congressman Oberstar will introduce a bill supporting Safe
Routes to School and other initiatives to support bicycling and walking. The
Pedestrian and Cyclist Equity Act of 2003 (PACE) is a great bill, and we're
hoping for a strong show of support from bicycling, walking, livable
community, environmental, education and health groups. Please forward this
message to anyone who might be interested.

You can help in two ways:

1) Please join us for a press conference with Congressman Oberstar to
announce the bill. Wednesday, June 18th, 1:00 pm outside on the terrace at
the NW corner of the Cannon House Office Building at New Jersey &
Independence Aves. We're hoping to have a good crowd on hand. We especially
need kids with or without bikes for good visuals. If you can bring children
or know where we can round some up, please contact
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. A media advisory is attached. In case of
rain, a staffer will be on the terrace to direct you to an indoor location.

2) The Congressman has asked us to help line up original co-sponsors for
the bill. A Dear Colleague went out to House members on June 13th. If you
have good relationships with House members, please give them a call and ask
them to sign on before June 18th. The attached Dear Colleague includes
details. If you do make contact with Reps, please let me know so we don't
double team too many people <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Visit www.americabikes.org/saferoutes for updates and more information. A
more detailed media release should be posted there by late Friday, June
13th. Please contact me with questions.

Thanks for your help!
