After a month or two of pre-emption by holiday stuff and football, Hack rode again Saturday night. Really soulful segment, in which Hack actually starts to wonder about the efficacy of using guns for self-defense. Prediction -- Hack becomes a stealth Mennonite. Also steadily increasing diversity -- Jewish mother lawyer (Cindy Katz), hot and spicy Rican ex-nun (Jacqueline Torres), PLUS Marcellus has a new partner -- Chu Mi Chang. He makes some comment about her being a "geisha" and she drily comments: "I'm Chinese." Also she saves his life and he remarks: "Good tackle." "Yes," she says, "I played women's soccer at Temple." Good golly, if it keeps up like this it's going to be Charlie's Angels, West Philly edition.
Speaking of West Philly, Hack is interviewing some homeboys and they inform him that the dude he's looking for went to "that school the Fresh Prince went to." Next scene -- West Philly High. Also some touching footage of Woodlands Cemetery.
PLUS which a bunch of dog references. The homeboys have a mean-looking pit-bull on a leash. When Marcellus and Chu Mi bust in on the white bad guy, he's got this little terrier named Pumpkin. Marcellus: "Call off your rat." Then, in a really funny sequence that defies credulity, Marcellus finds that Pumpkin doesn't have a license and threatens to send it to the shelter. The bad guy is all "no, no, not that!" Marcellus: "By tomorrow this little furball might be DAID!" Bad guy: "I'll talk, I'll talk!" As far as I know, no actual dogs were mistreated in the filming of the sequence.
