Describing ADT as "obnoxious" is accurate, from my experience. An ADT salesman was going door-to-door on our block about 2 years ago. I was working outside. When I told him I wasn't interested, he persisted to try to sell me an alarm system by using scare tactics. He tried to tell me that crime was up alarmingly in our area (which I knew was false and said so), etc. He questioned my knowledge of local crime: "Don't you read the papers?!" Then, finally, he walked away laughing (literally laughing, like a Twilight Zone mannequin that comes alive-- which are always scary), saying "You can believe that if you want to..."
I was even thinking this was some kind of scam , so I complained to ADT's Philadelphia office. They said this must have been an independent installer that carries ADT's line, or something. He said the actual ADT salesman only go to houses with appointments.
the other evening I was going down my porch steps when some guy with snow shovels asked me if I wanted the sidewalk shoveled. I said no thanks, as I was just about to do it myself and I really like shoveling snow (which is true ask anybody) and he very nicely said five bucks how about it and I said aw no thanks really. so then he left and as I went to get a shovel from the basement I felt kind of bad.
