This summer, the cicadas that emerge once every 17 years will be appearing on the east coast, apparently covering the area north of here all the way down to Georgia.
They emerge ... "now" (i.e. spring) ... not in the summer. They are dead by then.
(Adults usually live 3-4 weeks after emergence.)
Cicadas emerge when the soil temperature exceeds 64 F, which usually happens in late May.
Between May 17 and May 25, is one set of dates I've seen.

For anyone who lived in West Philadelphia 17 years ago: do we get these cicadas here? I know they usually inhabit (and eat) forests and wooded areas, but I'm not sure how densely wooded the area needs to be. Would Woodland cemetary qualify? How about Bartram's?
There are probably a few around, but I don't recall seeing any in number.
(They do fly in from the suburbs.)
How noisy does it get when the cicadas are out in full force?
In an infested area -- VERY!
