I was going to say something similar but you saved me the trouble. The new heaters are only going to last about 10 years now.
Gas heaters are supposed to be removed by the installer and recycled. I'm surprised the installer left without mentioning this problem. He would have had a better insight into removing the heater too.
Do you happen to have curbside fencing ? A lot of installers like to "get over" on dopes who have curbside fencing, especially if their last name is Diller or Cassidy.

That sounds strange. You must have very narrow doors.
Hot water tanks only last 10-20 years, max.
Also, I'm assuming that you are talking about the diameter of the tank and not it's height.
And are you talking about an outside door or an inside door?
If you are set upon hacking it into pieces ... be my guest. Other than carving up your fingers, you probably won't hit anything exciting.
Probable issues:
1- the tank is "fiberglas lined." - This means that there is a thin outside metal shell,
then a layer of fiberglass batting.
Removing this outer shell may be all that you need to do to clear the door.
You can probably "pop the top" and then slide the sleeve upwards and off. You likely need to remove any external valves and piping first.
2- The tank is a "glass lined" tank. This means that there (should be) a metal tank with a glass internal lining "bound" to it. Never took one appart, so I don't know...
Don't forget.
It may be easier to pull the hinge pins and remove the door to get the extra width you need.
