The Spruce Hill Community Association's annual meeting, Tuesday June 8, has been moved to Room C of Griffith Hall at the University of the Sciences. This is the large building on the east side of 43rd Street between Regent & Woodland. It's not only a bigger room, but it's configured so that comments and questions from the floor can be more readily heard by everybody.
Now that the Neighborhood Conservation District bill has passed City council with a veto-proof unanimous vote (it wouldn't have been vetoed anyway), historic designation for neighborhoods where George Washington never slept, Benjamin Franklin never flew a kite, and Alendar Hamilton didn't really live is a moot point. The preservation and revitalization goals many seek can now be achieved without the bag and baggage of the Philadelphia Historical Commission and its supercilious staff of architectural autocrats.
Come to the meeting, learn about this new option, and vote to put an end to the historic district nomination for once and for all by directing the Association to withdraw its support.
Residents of Philadelphia now have an option that, while not what each of us would consider perfect, makes a lot of sense and can be made to work in appropriate parts -- not only of Spruce Hill but throughout University City.
