Does anyone know what is going on with the delayed
completion of the older kid's playground at Clark Park? There seems to
have been no further work done on it for 3-4 weeks now, leaving very unsafe
conditions:
- open pipes
sticking out of the ground
- sharp gravel and broken concrete
underneath the play structures
- plastic "fencing" draped around the
playground area.
I realize, of course, that the orange plastic
fencing was intended as a barrier to prevent anyone from using the playground
while work is in progress, but no reasonable person would expect that kind of
fencing to keep kids out when it is clear that no work is being
done.
I spoke earlier today to Carlton Williams, Deputy
Commissioner in the Maintenance div of the city Recreation Dept. and, after
clarifying that this was the replacement for the older playground, not the
newly constructed tot-lot that I was talking about, he said he would look into
it -- there seemed to be some question as to whether it fell under his office,
or Capital Improvements. He did agree that a flexible plastic fence
could not be considered an adequate barrier to keep kids out of an unsafe
place.

pressure about this safety hazard (remember: this is the playground intended
for older children, who are less likely to be diligently supervised at the
