After a quick check under the register looking for something (maybe a "bank" for large bills?)
This is SOP -- most older registers have a manual release for the cash drawer which is accessed by raising up the register. ... a fact well known "in the business."
Interestingly, this release is also used by the proverbial "corner tappie" type of business as part of "skimming." The customer is given their change, but the transaction is never recorded on the register's detail tape. This particular usage is well known to IRS agents and accountants for such businesses.
