I seem to remember that crime goes up in University City around the holiday season.  I once witnessed a purse snatching while waiting for a friend who lived around 45th & Locust.  I remember that it was in the fall and around thanksgiving.  Maybe the holidays also make people more desperate and more bold.   Anyway, it is disturbing to hear that these crimes are happening so close to home.  From time to time I do see individuals who appear to be casing the block.  I usually make it a point to stare at the person and let them know that they've been noticed.  It may not make too much of a difference, but I think that getting a good description of someone lingering around might come in handy later or simply be a deterrent.
