There is no guaranteed method to avoid being a victim, but it is always good to notice who is around you, especially at an ATM after dark.  If in the slightest you feel like someone may be lurking, either keep on walking or noisily curse that you forgot "THAT DAMN ATM  CARD!"  Don't be embarrassed to look stupid.  Better stupid looking and safe than sorry.

Also if you are on the sidewalk and you think someone could be closing in, walk out into the street and get under the streetlights.  If you feel frightened be ready to flag down a car.  I know this sounds dramatic, but I do the "walking in the street" anytime I feel someone is behind me, it's dark and I'm not certain of the person's intentions.

Subject: [UC] Another Friday robbery

After I forwarded John Ellingsworth's emails about the Friday night masked men with guns to my son, he wrote:

<<I don't know if this is related, but I was talking to a recent acquaintance
of mine, at Green Line today. He told me about how he was robbed at
gunpoint at the ATM by the Farmers Market on Friday, around 7 pm. The man
took his cash and forced him to withdraw more money. Just after the robber
left, cops drove by and he flagged them down. They gave chase, but apparently
the robber managed to get away.>>

This certainly seems like an unusually high number of crimes recently, but thanks to people like Pete and John calling the police, hopefully we can get the robbers caught.  Everyone needs to remember to notice suspicious behavior and CALL THE POLICE, even if you're not sure a crime is about to take place.  Let them decide!
