From what I have read, Verizon has backed off its support of HB30.

Have you considered VOP phone service? If you have an independent broadband
connection, this may be a viable alternative to a landline phone.

The only issue with VoIP phone service is the fact that it does NOT work during any kind of power outage (both locally and at the provider's sites), and many other similar situations.

The only truly independent broadband capability in the area is via TimeWarner Cable (or Wade as they were once known). Everything else comes from Verizon. (Or Comcast on the other side of the river.)

All DSL connectivity in the Delaware Valley is provided by Verizon. They may "sell" the copper circuit to someone else who re-sells it to you, but in the end the dollars still go to Verizon, and Verizon is responsible for the maintenance of the "copper."

This is true of Cavalier just as much as it is with an ISP ... the copper is still Verizon's, and the Central Office is (for most of University City) at 38th and Chestnut. [I've been using Cavalier since they first started business in this area as a subsidiary of Delmarva Power and Light.]

Granted, with Cavalier, Verizon gets less income than if you had direct Verizon service, but Verizon still gets a chunk.

The only way around the power issue is via a Cell Phone service that doesn't roam via Verizon. [Assuming you have a fully charged battery and/or an automotive charger.]

From what I understand, Time Warner Cable will be offering PVR (personal video recorder) cable boxes within about 2 weeks (FINALLY !!!). The new boxes which support PVR, as well as those which support HD TV (but not the older "Digital" boxes), all support VoIP. (They also double as Cable Modems, eliminating the need for a separate box.) We expect to offer it "in the near future." ... Of course, this is what they said about the PVR support about 18 months ago.
