The word "cretin" which is also used in a derogatory fashion was derived from the French Chretien (Christian) which referred to insular groups of people who lived in parts of present day Switzerland who were said to be slow because of in-breeding. They practiced the imperial religion of the time which was Christianisme - Christianity. PS: Early Christians were also accused of cannibalism due to their references to communion as the Body and Blood of their founder and also Incest because of their habit of referring to one another as Brother or Sister (thus the rampant cretinism).
