Title: RE: [UC] Crime in West Philly/Ucity
When I lived in East Falls and there was an up tick in crime (usually of the petty property type as opposed to the Wild, Wild West shoot-em up, "everybody get on the ground" variety that goes on in the UC 'hood), the local community group would get in touch with the Captain for the local police district and have him (it was always a male) come to a community meeting to explain what the Police Department was doing to address the problem.  It was reassuring to the community and seemed to make the District concentrate its resources in the area to address the problem.

I am curious, do any the local UC community groups follow a similar strategy?  If this isn't being done, I  think that the 'hood needs to start making some noise both to J.B.'s office and the local police districts in order to apply pressure so that they will increase/redirect police resources to address what appears to be, at the very least, a short terms increase in serious crime in the area.  It seems to me that these "crime waves" tend to be cyclical and usually caused by a small number of the criminal element. Once they are caught and locked up, things quiet down until the next cycle.

this was a topic of discussion several days ago here -- it seems that anticdotally crime has skyrocketed -- however, i suspect that at least SOME (hopefully MOST) of that is because we're all talking to one another about it -- previously my only exposure to how much crime was going on in UC (with the exception of personal experience at the point of a gun) was whatever the DP chose to report -- were that the case now, i'd have no idea of the gun embattled hell-hole that is 46th and hazel. i think maybe we just hear more about crime now.

but i second the motion (which i made a couple of days ago too) that i want to hear MORE from the police about what's going on in my neighborhood. i want to hear, specifically, RESOLUTIONS -- someone was shot in the face? was anybody arrested? when's the court date? were they convited? have other similar crimes occurred?

AND i freakin want a police scanner that works.

Christy and I were watching t.v. a couple days ago when we heard a gunshot that sounded like it came from the area of the super 7. "was that a gunshot?" she asked. about 30 seconds later, sirens. "must have been a gunshot" i said -- but i have no idea what's going on -- should i be worred? is there a mugger running around shooting people? or was it some guy shooting a tin can in his back yard?

Folks,
I'm feeling what Victor's feeling. Empirically, it seems like the crime level in UC has down and back up within about 5 years. Does anyone know where we can get crime statistics for the area? Either from the UC police, UCD or any other persons or organizations?

Thanks in advnace,

So is it my imagination or is crime on the increase in our neighborhood?  It seems like when I moved in, things had become more chill, but I've been hearing about a lot of incidents lately.

Anyone know anything official about the crime rate?
