One thing that always puzzles me about this local Republican slime campaign orchestrated by Karl Rove is that "pay-to-play" is the name of the game in Washington politics, more among Republicans than Democrats, but definitely the name of the game.
Halliburton has been paying to play for years, and they get tiny slaps on the wrist. Tom DeLay is the poster boy for pay-to-play, and the House Republicans change the "ethics" rules so that he can continue in his seat even after he is indicted.
But when a Democratic (and most significantly, an African-American) local administration tries to get into the game, there are all these hysterical assholes howling in chorus about "pay-to-play", "pay-to-play", as though this is some particularly vile vice that the darkies have just thought up.
Oy vey ist mir.
