We've been using Verizon DSL for about 8 months. We switched from Comcast
because cable was just a lot more expensive (DSL will still be cheaper even
if Verizon adds $10 after the first year).
The rate of 3000 (kilobits/sec) that was quoted is, I believe, part of the
"Power Plan", which starts at $19.99 and will go up to $29.99 after 6
months. That's the one that offers speeds of up to 3000. We're using the
"Starter" plan (up to 768 kilobits/sec), at $14.99 for the first 12 months
(and no definite indication of an increase thereafter). The speed is, to
me, comparable to what we had with cable, and we're happy with it.
Service? We've only had to contact them during one "event" - a period of
about three weeks when our speed dropped precipitously for a day or two at a
time, then shot back to normal (around 700 kbps) for about 3-4 days, then
the whole thing happened again - several times. I did get the scripted
response - nothing the tech guy (yes, he was Indian) suggested worked,
although he was quite competent. I asked for (and got) escalated support.
They sent me a replacement modem - but it also didn't solve the problem, and
I sent it back, no charge (they paid for return shipment). To make it short,
no one ever discovered the cause of the problem, and it vanished after three
weeks and never came back. Been fine for the past 2 months.

I have Verizon DSL and have helped many people in the area with either
Cable or DSL Configurations.
At this point in time I prefer Verizon DSL over Cable internet because
I have found that Verizon is generally easier to configure -
especially if you use a router. In my experience Verizon is also less
likely to change the names of their servers or block access to
specific types of software like network file sharing or corporate
email accounts.
When the $50.00 modem has failed in the past we have just exchanged it
for a new one.
Verizon has reimbursed me for poor service and if there is an issue
with the phone line itself that prevents you from accessing voice and
DSL that the PUC will step in and help.
Verizon sometimes gives free speed upgrades so once the service is
established you can call customer service and ask them to upgrade the
speed of your connection. I think my current speed is 3,000 which is
very nice.

Since e-link Wireless is not for me, (too many trees around here)--I'm
looking at a Verizon High-Speed Internet service offer. The promo is that
it's only 14.99 if you sign up for 1 year.
Being suspicious, I called and pried more details from them!
Yes, it's 14.99/month for a 1-year contact, but around 10-12 months
in--they
send you a quote of what your rate will go up to. They call it a
"contract
fee"
(And they said they have no way of knowing what it will be? )
If you don't like it, you do not sign up for another year, and the
service
is now 37.99/month.
Or, to terminate entirely, it's $79.
And the modem costs around $50.....
Has anyone had experience with them?
How's the Tech Support? (I heard 1 nightmare story)
They say they have software that will automatically forwards your old
email
to your new address.
Input, please?
