Thanks for reminding us. I typed in Belmont 112. There is some interesting
stuff. Newberg at Penn has some things. A book called The Gift of
Education. (I'm having trouble sending links)
Here is a very interesting paper and some history of Penn pulling out of Lea
in 1969. They went in for real estate reasons and they abandoned Lea for
real estate reasons.

This is an excellent indication of Penn's commitment. In the Inq. article
about the school forum, it was revealed that Drexel recently did the same
thing. They pulled out from the very neighborhood schools they are now
offering charity.
(According to Rosenello: One third of Philadelphia public schools do not
have full time music or art teachers)
Everyone owes it to themselves to read this history of Lea and Penn.

Although I applaud and exalt those who have thrived, please understand how
it has torn my heart out after following this project for at least fifteen
years or more, to realize how that interest and those funds could have
helped those struggling African-American parents fought who sacrificed and
actually got their children a quality and even top-notch education against
all financial and societal odds.
If nothing else, it would have been a better return on their monetary
investment.
To this day I am not certain whether this was really to help the
down-trodden as opposed to a social-political experiment to laying the
groundwork for future to exclude them AND hamstring those of us who are
still a thorn in the side of those who deem us to be belligerent,
vociferous
and paranoid.
I just don't know.

Yes and No, Tony!
Ever since the " Belmont 112", the George Weiss Project I have always
been
suspicious.
Granted the PSSA scores are as you say, but why would someone as
apparently
dedicated George Weiss or Penn decline to lend finanical assistance to
highly, motivated, intelligent working/middle-class African Americans
like
me or others in the neighborhood?
Why have these lofty projects always been proposed where the results
would
be nowhere near the expectations for the money?
Why did my parents have to foot the bill entirely for those of us who
went
to Ivy League Universities or exclusive small, private Liberal Arts
Colleges? Granted they should have, but they still could have used
help.
Why were millions were dedicated to those who might not have OR did not
even
make it through High School?
What were they afraid of? Investing millions in students that could
eventually wind up as their fiercest competition (as many of us did
through
Affirmative Action before it was curtailed), as opposed to some whom
might
make it but most would and DID not.
This would prove throwing money at the problem does not work.
As for what Penn/Drexel is doing, I would hate to surmise they would be
basing any of this upon, "Hey, we tried, we invested over and over
again.
Now, they have to go." (so to speak) Still, we tried to do the right
thing.
That is MY greatest fear!
