THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! Dear BAEO Board of Directors, Friends, Community Members and Parents: There will be 7 more charter schools in Philadelphia thanks to you and your efforts!!! The School Reform Commission voted yesterday 5-0 to conditionally approve seven more charter schools to open in the 2009-10 school year. As we requested, you emailed and/or faxed members of the SRC to voice your opposition to their proposal to deny applications. You flooded them with emails bombarded them with phone calls jammed their fax machines and we thank you!!! Because of our collective effort to demand that our students be given quality educational options, the SRC voted unanimously to give the “green light” to the learning and success of our students. We are indeed grateful and appreciative for your response. Five of the seven charters approved will serve high school students, including Arise Academy Charter School (which will be the nation’s first public high school designed for youth in foster care), and Eastern University Charter School (which will provide students with college preparatory classes). Additionally, Philadelphia Polytechnic Charter School, Sankofa Freedom Academy Charter School, Tacony Academy Charter School, KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School and Franklin Towne Charter School were approved to educate our younger minds. It is often said that “it takes a village to raise a child.” This was one of those critical instances where it was necessary for us to come together as a community as a village and we did!!!
