I received PHILADELPHIA FOLKLORE PROJECT'S Fall 2008 "WORKS IN PROGRESS" In today's mail. It is a beautiful and inspirational read. Debora Kodish and Germaine Ingram have gathered people and recorded biographies (and auto biographies) to craft a sermon, that is not preachy, on the virtues of character, persistence, creativity, passion, equal rights and contributions. I remember being struck by the quality and beauty of their previous editions and realized how much I value their contribution to our neighborhood. Debora and Germaine describe their magazine as a "modest contribution to showing and building" community and appreciating the contribution of non homogenized individuals. I think the magazine and editors deserve kudos. I hope many will visit PFT, at 735 S. 50th Street, and become a member. I have enjoyed events and spent a quiet afternoon happily spent touring their space Basic membership is only $25.00 per year. Members get the magazines, special mailings, and a 25% discount on publications, CDs and DVDs sold at PFT. In my case, I've made up the membership fee with discounts on some fascinating publications and media. The greater the number of members (and dollars raised) the more PFT can continue its 21 year mission of supporting and presenting local folk arts, while providing opportunities for cultural exchange and artistic expression. PFT even barters sweat equity exchanges for Membership, so a lack of money should not keep you from the good times and great folk arts. If I wasn't so busy with ongoing volunteer obligations, this would be my choice for an organization with which to get involved. It feels good to know that others are donating to and volunteering for PFT so it can continue to exist, as respite from work and volunteering done for other groups.
