Hello,

On the evening of July 12th (around 9:30 pm), an elderly neighbor suffered
serious facial injuries (fractures and lacerations) when he was attacked
from behind with something hard. Before the perpetrator could actually rob
the victim, neighbors came out in response to the victim's shouts and
scared the mugger off. The mugger is described as early 20's, tall thin
build, African American. The victim was walking west on Windsor, towards
48th Street from 47th Street. The community relations office of the 18th
District has been contacted, and that office is aware of the community's
concern. I also heard that the bike officers are aware of the incident, and
will be on the lookout.
As always, we cannot rely only on the police, but must be vigilant
ourselves. Please be careful while walking, and also check your homes to
make sure that there is adequate lighting, especially near sidewalks. Now
that the summer is in full swing, and trees and shrubs are fully foliated,
its not a bad idea to walk in the center of the road when the sidewalks are
dark, and to take other similar precautions which provide visibility of
yourself and others.
Keep on keepin' on,

Patty Bulack
