The Zoning Code Commission will hold a meeting in nearby Southwest
Philadelphia to brief residents and seek their input on proposed new
regulations that cover open space, landscaping, tree culture and parking.
The meeting is one of four meetings being held across the city. It will
be at Victory Christian Center, 5220 Whitby Ave., one block south of
Baltimore Ave. It'll start at 6pm and wrap up by 8pm.
The Zoning Code Commission was established by referendum in 2007 to
study a top-to-bottom overhaul of Philadelphia's quirky, cumbersome
zoning regs. Heated controversies have flared up in University in recent
years over their Byzantine byways, which typically lead to Zoning Board
of Adjustment hearings and decisions.
Eva Gladstein, executive director of ZCC, explains its mission as
"creating a new zoning code that is easy to understand, encourages
positive development, preserves the character of Philadelphia's
neighborhoods and enhances the City's development-approval process."
She adds, "Citizens will be able to help shape a zoning code that will
guide development throughout the city and in their neighborhood for
decades."
