Neighbors,
The UC Review has courageously published the first part of a series on
corporate welfare (link below).
Locally, we saw the government funnel money to organizations like UCD
for grants to SOME local businesses. Also, UCD gets government "grants"
for things like the upscale Baltimore lights and gets to keep 60% of
the money for their services. (Now that Clark Park is shielded from the
pesky public, we can assume, at least that amount of tax payer money,
goes for their "services."). All of this welfare and Pinochetean
privatization is part of the same illegal unethical diversion of our
money from the public good to elite and connected private hands.
Corporate welfare has been increasing for decades and has decimated
Philadelphia and other big cities. At this point, we are in a
competition of begging! Cities are begging these corporations to take
tax payer money, as we engage in positive thinking and wait for the
infamous trickle down effect.
The corporate leaders of our Republican/Democrat duopoly see the
primary role of government as service to the corporate elite at our
expense. Not only does this elite refuse to pay their share of taxes to
the general welfare, they demand that the poor and lower middle class
pay for their lavish lifestyles with these grants and schemes.
Neighbors, this corporate welfare is theft from the taxpayers of this
state and city. Those people in this neighborhood who support this
theft while hoping that money will trickle down to this gentrified
neighborhood are pathetic conspirators in this theft!
Revolution is not inevitable as some have theorized (see learned
helplessness and slavery). But I believe it is our only hope for both
freedom and survival!
