Venissa Santi inherited her musical passion from her grandfather, the Cuban 
composer Jacobo Ros Capablanca. She studied classical and jazz vocal technique 
at the University of the Arts and has made five trips to Cuba to study ocha 
(Afro-Cuban religious music) and rumba with master singers in Havana and 
Matanzas. In Philadelphia, she has also studied piano and percussion and 
teaches at the Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos, a community music 
school in North Philadelphia. In 2008, she received a prestigious Pew 
Fellowship in folk and traditional arts.

Since emerging onto Philadelphia’s jazz scene, Joanna Pascalehas established 
herself as a compelling and skilled vocalist. She has a working repertoire of 
over four hundred songs and has appeared and recorded with jazz giants such as 
Terell Stafford, Tim Warfield, Mickey Roker, Cyrus Chestnut and others. She is 
also a member of the vocal faculty at Temple University, teaches private voice 
and ensemble lessons, and conducts performance practices and workshops. Her 
working band includes Tim Warfield, saxophones; Andrew Adair, piano; Madison 
Rast, bass; and drummer Dan Monaghan.
