Urban Girls Produce is getting out of the egg business. A raccoon, or
whatever the creature is, has continued its attacks at the Urban Girls
farm at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. We have
tried our best to keep the chickens closed up tight at night, and not
let any stay outside the coop. But the minute we slip up even a tiny
amount, the next morning there is yet another dead chicken with its head
bitten off. So, we are giving up on keeping chickens at the farm.
Whatever is killing them will continue to kill at this point. It even
attacked a chicken during the day several weeks ago.
We are looking for good homes for the remaining 14 chickens. We have
black australorps, calm and steady brown egg layers, Rhode Island Reds
who are also brown layers - one, Henrietta, is very tame. We also have
the Americaunas, very pretty birds who lay bluish eggs. These are laying
hens with at least three good productive years ahead of them so we are
looking for people who want to keep laying hens - it would be a sin to
have them end up in a stew pot.
Let us know if anyone is interested. We want to get them off the farm
as soon as possible. Please forward this on to anyone you think might be
interested. I am going to keep 3 of the chickens for my back yard, but
that still leaves 14 hens to place.
Thanks so much!
