I don't know if you've seen any coverage of the uprising by the corporate media.  They are using the same dismissal tactic as they used against the Occupy movement.  They are pretending that the uprising doesn't have a purpose, and asking; "what do they want?"  Then, they are trying to insinuate that the real reason people are revolting is secular/Muslim conflict. 

 Claiming that the "economy is great" in Turkey because of rising stocks and corporate power, they refuse to report on the anti-democratic movement merged with neoliberal capitalism of recent years.  Why does the media pretend to be hopelessly stupid about the suffering of the people, and so sure of itself, when the war drums are beating and attacks are made on heroic journalists like Julian Assange and the journalists of Yemen, etc.???

Philadelphia:

With the plan to bulldoze the last public park in Istanbul to erect a shopping mall, I think it's a good time for residents to reevaluate their embrace of the privatization and commercialization of all Philadelphia public spaces like Clark Park and Dilworth Plaza.  While Turkey is foreshadowing many parts of our future, including police brutality, local people still believe the civic association leaders will be allowed their micro-dictatorships of our public spaces and that riches will trickle down.

The history of authoritarian regimes and the neo-colonial use of groups like FOCP/SHCA shows a different inevitable result!  We have allowed our parks to be given to corporate control!  Allowing the micro-dictatorships, during the gentrification, was the same as allowing colonial governors the power to brutalize in classical colonialism.  But the power of these governors is really an illusion, and is all concentrated around keeping the locals under control!  The leadership of FOCP/SHCA will eventually be horrified when they are pushed aside as throwaways, the same as they assisted our masters to categorize the people of this neighborhood as "prostitutes, gangs, and drug addicts."  This standard tactic of colonialism is commonly called, "divide and conquer."

I was never surprised that a few individuals would claim to represent the community in order to gain personal power.  But I was very surprised at how easily the rest of us allowed it to happen because Penn and Wall St. would pave our streets with gold!!!  

The big question for me is, are our neighbors finally willing to examine what is happening here and around the world, so that they can embrace humanity instead of worship of the plutocrats?

Unlike here, the people of Turkey value their PUBLIC park and are being killed defending it.  Do people still believe that privatization of parks by special service districts was a divine plan to bring paradise?  Are we happy that Philadelphia parks will be shopping centers, corporate event venues, or sold for private development??

Brave people of Turkey, the remaining citizens of the US stand in solidarity with you!
