Notes re. mechanical leaf collection:

1) leaves picked up mechanically today & tomorrow WILL be taken to the Fairmount Park recycling center (to be composted)
2) they've started collection TODAY (Thurs), closer to campus
3) there MIGHT be mechanical pick-up on the other side of Baltimore - they couldn't confirm or give locations, when I talked to them today

The more leaves the city picks up mechanically the better! Get out and rake/sweep, if you can. Even if the leaf vacuum doesn't get to your pile of leaves it will be easier (for you) to bag them, whether you put out for trash or haul them (in the paper leaf bags) to the dirt factory (Market, btw 43rd & 44th - check website for times of operation).

See Mark's note below, about Dec 3 block clean-up day.

Fall Leaf Collection

Here's some details on city leaf collection for University City:

Once again this year the city is going to use blowers and vacuums to pick up leaves along the curb in a limited section of University City. That is the area between 38th and 52nd Streets and Spruce and Baltimore Ave. The pickup date for that area is this Friday, Nov. 18. Leaves should be raked to the curb (unbagged) by 7 a.m. This will be rain or shine. They will make one pass and and not come back later.

Residents wishing to recycle their leaves can put them into paper bags and bring them to a city recycling center. Be sure not to include trash and debris. The nearest centers are at 43rd and Powelton Ave. and 66th and Haverford Ave. This is 9-3 on Saturday starting the 19th, but not the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Leaves left in bags along the curb will go into the regular trash pickup and not be recycled.

There is lots more info for anyone interested on the Streets Dept. Web site: http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/leaves/mechanical-leaf-collection and http://www.philadelphiastreets.com/leaves/bagged-leaf-drop-off-location-schedule

In addition, the University City District has scheduled a block cleanup on Dec. 3. Here are the details on that:

On Saturday, December 3rd, UCD is partnering with the City of Philadelphia to organize a neighborhood cleanup. We will assist block captains, students, volunteer groups and neighbors by providing trash bags, brooms, work gloves, and trash pickup. Help keep University City beautiful by cleaning your block or street from 9am - 2pm. To sign up and join the effort, please contact a...@universitycity.org or via phone at215-243-0555.
