as I was the uploader who introduced the change, some explanation:

During these days (2007) there was a xorg transition, could be that during 
these days the packages was FTBFSing because of some missing lib-dev files, 
which were then in libxext-dev.
If the package builds now without it, we can drop the change and sync it from 
debian.

Bhavani, I send you the same explanation as reply to your email to me.
Please check if there is no regression of the original debian 
package...buildwise and functionalwise.
