Almost certainly fixed by this:
grub2 (1.96+20090826-3ubuntu3) karmic; urgency=low
* 951_quick_boot.diff: Always initialise timeout from GRUB_TIMEOUT,
otherwise there'll be no timeout when other operating systems are
installed.
