I think the only way to verify this would be to run Ubuntu and GNOME in a StracciatellaSession. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/Jaunty/StracciatellaSession for information on how to change gdm to login on this modified GNOME session an let us know if the issue is still there. Thanks.
