Just curious what everybody done about security issues. To prevent

firewalls , etc .
If you are using it as a server...
- then trojans are not an issue, since 'you' download them and 'you
should know better!
- then you probably have more than one host, if so you should have the
whole lot behind a firewall, have a look at IPCop for an easy to setup
hardware firewall using a bit of old junk you have lying around.
If it is the only box you have then the above still applies actually!
Basically no machine should be on the network that is not behind a
firewall.
While it does not improve the security of that particular machine it
does improve your exposer to 'malcontents' on the net.
It give you one point entrance to maintain.
IPCop, which is what I use and there are plenty others, also has 'blue' (wireless)
segment so that your 'green' (internal) network is separated from
'blue' well worth the effort setting it up. There are loads of addons
that will do mail filtering etc.
I have my slimserver running on my mythtv box, all media in one place,
I am having a box consolidation in an attempt to reduce the amount
hosts I have running which at the moment stands at
6 Linux boxes
2 windows boxes
1 sun box
2 voip adaptors
2 squeezeboxes
It's all too much! Running out of cabling to the basement, need to pull
some through!
Summary:
Get it behind a firewall, I don't believe slimserver is designed with
security in mind, mythtv certainly isn't and they actually state that!
