Thanks everyone for the comments. I did try to do my homework before I bought the Linkstation. I chose an HD-HG250 because it was a PPC platform instead of MIPS. I thought this would give a better chance of success with my limited abilities. I was hoping that telnet would be enabled, but it turned out that it wasn't. I ended up using Openlink to open the box, after much hard consideration of the problems people have had with the HD-HG300. I had a somewhat nervous 5-10 minutes while the firmare updated, but everything installed without a hitch.
After installing Openlink I followed the instructions on fieldnetwork.com. I downgraded Perl to 5.8.5 (from the link on fieldnetworks.com). SlimServer 6.2.1 loaded and ran on the first try. Not including downloads and configuring network settings to direct connect the Linkstation to my PC, the whole process took less than an hour, with me being very careful to check for typos. I am now joyfully listening to a random (and eclectic) mix of the 90 or so CDs I have ripped so far. It was always about the music anyway. -Robert -- bikerx ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bikerx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2869 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19524 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
