There is no simple answer to your question.

Most of the time, everything just continues to work. Sometimes, a piece
of code changes and some things may break.

I tend to monitor the CVS list/forum to watch out for changes.

It also depends on which branch you're tracking.

I keep up to date with the main trunk (v6.5) so I'm on the bleeding
edge. But I can code in perl and debug issues and have even been known
to check-in fixes.

If you just want to keep up-to-date with the latest bug fixes in the
stable branch, BRANCH_6_2_x is the one to track.
