Something like this would probably meet the requirements for low noise,
energy efficiency and enough muscle to run a large collection:

Bump it to 512 RAM and you're there.  But you still need a large
external drive and have to think about the added power consumption,
noise, cost, etc.

It really might be a good compromise to get a cheap $300 Dell and stick
a big drive in it, run it headless and have it sleep when not in use. 
They are pretty quiet and fairly efficient.  Also, you'd have a real OS
and a fast CPU if you wanted to run a samba share, mail server, etc.
