Mostly I'm wondering what's needed to make slim server run well on a
large music library.

I really wish it was written in, say, C++, not perl. It wouldn't be so
extensible, but it would probably run beautifully on a low end PC104
board and Windows CE or Linux. I shouldn't be wondering if 256M and
800Ghz is going to be enough to get snappy response.
