Unfortunately haven't had time to try it out yet, but I'm still unclear
about what SlimCD does with playlists - ie. I've put together a great
playlist, so I decide to save it - Slimserver will want to write a
*.m3u file to my 'Playlist directory', which generally is in the same
place as the music files. Now if this is on a read-only NTFS drive,
that's going to be a problem, isn't it? But if the drive is FAT32,
shouldn't be an issue, right?

Correct.

Or am I totally misunderstanding something? Does SlimCD keep playlist
files in the ramdisk?

By default, yes. But if you're using a fat32 formatted disk you can change the playlist folder to that disk.

I'm currently negotiating to
have a box built specifically to run SlimCD (with an external USB HD),
so I'm just trying to make sure I don't miss any considerations.

Test driving SlimCD doesn't cost you anything (except time and a CD-R). Before you start investigating an investment, play around with it. You could even download VMWare player (vmware.com) and test drive SlimCD _without_ booting your PC or burning the image to a disc.
