I've lost track of what kind of computer you are using, but
rather than play arround with some weird external box while
you are trying to learn Linux and all that, I'd strongly
suggest you put a normal internal disk drive in the box,
format it with EXT2 or EXT3, and get that to work perfectly.

Later on, when everything else works, you can add Samba
so your windoze boxes can drag and drop files, or even
try to use a heathen format like FAT32. But I'd stay
away from anything Windozish until it is totally up,
stable, and working great.

And I'd probably never use FAT32 on any new box. When I add
Windoze boxes, I use NTFS, not FAT32.
