I mentioned in another thread that I've seen a big performance slowdown
after upgrading from Fedora Core 1 to Fedora Core 5.

I've finally tracked it down to an update to the Perl package. Check
out the results of this simple performance test.

The test: Start up a fresh copy of the server and click on Browse
Artists (with 2425 artists). Time how long it takes the page to
refresh.

The results:
*perl 5.8.8-4*: 4 seconds
*perl 5.8.8-5*: 64 seconds

Holy cow. Something changed in the update to 5.8.8-5 that causes it to
run 16X slower in this test!

There's a Fedora bug against this, but it doesn't look like they'll be
doing much about it:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=196836

So I'll be sticking with the older package!
